Speaking in Tongues
At HopeUC Nashville, we embrace the gift of speaking in tongues as a beautiful and powerful aspect of our faith. Here's what we believe about this spiritual gift:
What is Speaking in Tongues?
Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift given by the Holy Spirit. It's one of the ways we can experience and express the presence of God in our lives. The Bible mentions this gift in several places, including Acts 2:4 and 1 Corinthians 12:10.
How Does It Work?
Speaking in tongues can take two main forms:
This gift serves several purposes:
We believe that all believers have the potential to receive this gift. However, we also recognize speaking in tongues is not the only evidence of a Spirit-filled life.
Our Approach
While we celebrate this gift, we also emphasize using it in a way that builds up the church and honors God. We encourage those interested in this gift to study the scriptures, particularly 1 Corinthians 14, which provides context for its use in church gatherings.

How Does It Work?
Speaking in tongues can take two main forms:
- A language that can be interpreted, often used in church gatherings for prophecy and words of knowledge (1 Corinthians 14:4-5).
- A personal prayer language between the believer and God (1 Corinthians 14:2).
This gift serves several purposes:
- It's a sign of the Holy Spirit's presence in a believer's life (Acts 2:4, Acts 10:44-46, Acts 19:6).
- It helps believers grow spiritually and draw closer to God (1 Corinthians 14:4).
- When interpreted, it can bring encouragement and insight to the whole church (1 Corinthians 14:4-5).

Baptism of the Holy Spirit
At HopeUC Nashville, we believe in the baptism or infilling of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2, Acts 10:44-46). This is a distinct encounter, separate from water baptism, that empowers believers to live in close partnership with God.
What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a unique experience, different from water baptism. We see this clearly in Acts 19, where the Ephesian believers first received water baptism, and then experienced the Holy Spirit:
"On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied."
How Does It Manifest?
The infilling of the Holy Spirit can be evidenced in various ways:

The infilling of the Holy Spirit can be evidenced in various ways:
- Through spiritual gifts like speaking in tongues or prophecy (Acts 19:6)
- Through the fruit of the Spirit in a believer's life (Gal 5:16-22)
- Most importantly, through a life that increasingly reflects the character of Christ (1Cor 11:1)
We believe this experience empowers believers to:
- Live in closer communion with God
- Serve others more effectively
- Grow in spiritual maturity and Christ-like character
