Baptism Explained...

WHY SHOULD A CHRISTIAN BE WATER BAPTIZED?
As a church, we practice Full Immersion. The Greek word, "Baptizo" means “to dip, plunge under, to make fully wet.”

Jesus commanded his disciples to baptize believers:
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them …" Matthew 28:19 (NIV)

Jesus gave it significance and tied it to obedience of the believer:
"Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." Mark 16:16 (NIV)
WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?
Please note the emphasis in Mark is on believing – a reasoned response and one of trust. This is a response of believing in Jesus and his salvation.

Baptism does not make someone saved. Being baptized is the action of a saved person testifying to belief in what Jesus has done and is doing in them.

Because of this, questions come up about the right age for baptism, infant or adult. We leave the decision to be baptized to parents to talk with their children and determine if they think their child is ready for baptism and has an appropriate understanding of what is happening. We give fathers and mothers the opportunity to help with their child’s baptism.
WHAT DOES BAPTISM MEAN?
Baptism is extremely symbolic. It represents death to self, burial and resurrection in Christ. Scripture says:

”having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.” Colossians 2:12 (NIV)

”Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” Romans 6:3-4 (NIV)

Baptism is ultimately to help us express our faith in what Christ accomplished and receive the life he promised us for now and the future.  Baptism is also meant to be part of our worship life and community expression on this earth. Baptism is a special time for believers and we are honored to be able to have a part in any believers participation in this service.
